You might also check with Fidelity. They have a great retirement calculator. In short, you are selling those stocks or indexes which have appreciated the most and replacing them with stocks or indexes which underperformed. In closing, there is no way to absolutely bombproof your retirement. The stock market saw its worst decline since the Great Depression. Over a long period of 50 years, yes stocks have returned about 9%, however as seen by the last decade, the return of stocks have been close to 0%. Of course there is also the matter of determining which mixture of stocks is appropriate. The key to surviving and prospering is hiring great people. Depending on your outlook on asset allocation theory, some argue to rebalance every 6 months. There is no mathematical formula or anyone who can absolutely guarantee you will receive a 10% return by investing in stocks. A planner will take into account your lifestyle, accumulated savings, risk tolerance, health and other factors to determine how you should be invested. In fact, those 100% invested in the S&P 500 (the standard benchmarks of the US stock market) have seen returns of .9% including dividends. As with all storms, the darkness has dissipated (at least for now) and some sectors made tremendous gains. If you started out properly allocated, chances are your portfolio is now out of synch. However if you have non correlated investments such as US stocks, emerging market stocks, gold, bonds and investments in overseas currency, chances are your portfolio may outperform a single indice such as the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Gold and metal stocks tend to do well when there is economic uncertainly. If you are invested in 10 different market categories and they are all correlated, chances are you will suffer right along with the general market. A 20 year old who has a 40 year time horizon before retiring will be allocated differently than a 55 year old with just 5-10 years from retirement. The value of the various assets within your portfolio will change, affecting the weighting of each asset class. However, you probably didn’t have a crystal ball.

There is always a way to make money in whatever economic condition you are presented. Don’t take enough risk in your portfolio and your investments will be ravaged by inflation. Happy investing! Well, at least that’s what I’d be doing. There will be recessions, perhaps a depression, political unrest, a terrorism event either here or abroad which will rattle the markets and affect your personal financial well being. Each of the above market sectors will outperform the other sometime during the economic cycle. Take too much risk and you could suffer huge losses (2008-2009) which you may never recover. If you were fully invested in 2009, you saw gut wrenching drops only to be followed by many indices making new multi year highs. Some financial pundits and economists were calling for the Dow Jones Industrial average to reach as low as 5000. The tricky part though is trying to find YOUR proper allocation. Others were calling for a modest recovery off the lows of 6500.

After the last couple of years, you should know your risk tolerance when it comes to investing. Failure to reallocate and make adjustments will result in a portfolio that is volatile and will not serve your retirement needs. Will you chose to allocate money to small cap emerging market stocks or Large cap US Growth stocks? The housing market collapsed. It is extremely difficult to guess what type of market you are in while it is happening. Think smart, invest wisely, keep your cool and drown out the unwanted noise. We have been through some of the volatile markets in decades in 2009. If you invested 100% in stocks, you lost to inflation and would have seen better returns by investing in boring government bonds. There is a very good chance you didn’t call a 4000 point rally in the Dow in March. Get 50 economists in a room and chances are you will have 50 different answers on where the stock market will reach in a 12 month period. This is not an endorsement, just a disclosure. Emerging markets have seen gains of 75% or more. As you can see, simply dividing your money among a two to three market sectors will not achieve proper diversification. Special note:I have investments with IFA. As we’ve seen by this decade alone, your investments will be prone to outside forces you have no control over. This is where an experienced financial planner will help tremendously. Although past performance does not guarantee future success, proper asset allocation has been incredibly effective. Should you suffer a 50% decline in your portfolio, your returns will have to DOUBLE just to break even. After all, there are some investors who purchased Citibank at .97 and Apple at $30.

This simply means is that the financial institution holding your IRA assets will provide directions on how to transfer those assets to an IRA directly to another financial institution. This bypasses the need for you to take possession of the funds (ie. This means, that in order to satisfy the 60 day rule, you’d have to deposit not only the check proceeds from the 401k, but the money withheld for taxes! Same Property Rule: IRA Rollovers from one IRA to another must consist of the same property. Receive a check payable to you). A rollover IRA is a special type of IRA that is used to receive distributions from an employer sponsored qualified plan, such as 401k, 403b, defined benefit or profit sharing plans.

If you are planning to, or have already initiated an IRA Rollover, watch out for these common mistakes, because one misstep can cost you dearly. The IRS frowns upon this transaction and will consider this as a cash distribution, which of course, will cause a taxable event. Specifically, you must include the amount of the distribution as ordinary income on your taxes, and if you are younger than 59 ½ you also get sacked with a 10% penalty on the withdrawal. Hands down, the most effective way to avoid IRA transfer blunders is to request “trustee-to trustee” transfers.

The exception to this rule is a distribution from an employer sponsored qualified plan. That could spell disaster for you, both in terms of taxes and the wasted opportunity to grow your IRA’s on a tax deferred basis. Frankly, the “trustee-to-trustee” method this is the easiest way to transport your money from one bucket to the next if you are merely moving your IRA from one custodian to another. So what is a Rollover IRA? In other instances, a check may be sent to the investor, but payable to the new provider or custodian for your benefit (ie. Specifically, this rule prohibits your ability to take a distribution from your IRA and purchase other assets with that cash, only to later deposit the newly acquired assets into another IRA.

Credit: Volkswagen Finance España

Not All Rollovers are Created Equal Pay particular attention to rollovers from employer plans like the 401k. Rollovers are slightly different than “direct rollovers”. One Year Waiting Rule: You may not make another rollover from the same IRA to another IRA if you have already conducted a rollover (full or partial) from that same IRA account. Conversely, with an indirect rollover, your 401k plan proceeds are distributed to directly you, but the law requires that the plan administrator withhold 20% of your funds in an indirect rollover which is sent directly to the IRS. A “transfer” is not necessarily considered a “rollover”, can be done an unlimited number of times, and is not reported as a distribution, which therefore exempts you from the one year waiting rule. Check payable to Fidelity FBO John Smith). Ouch. The Rules 60 day Rule: Whether you’re rolling over a company retirement account or IRA assets, you have a maximum of 60 days in which to complete the rollover to another IRA if the distribution is made directly to you, instead of the rollover IRA account. Failure to complete the rollover in this time frame will result in taxes and possibly penalties.

In most cases, the transfers can be electronically sent directly to the new firm or Fund Company. Or we may leave one job for a new one or simply retire. It’s inevitable, at some point or another we might ditch one provider, advisor or fund company for another. If you don’t know the rules of the game, it’s easy to get fouled out, and when it comes to IRA Rollovers, those fouls can cost you big money if you are not careful. The bottom line is this, when it comes to rollovers, you better know your stuff–or at least have the proper oversight with a competent advisor. Company 401k direct rollovers allow you to transfer your retirement funds directly over to your new employer’s retirement plan or into a rollover IRA plan as a trustee to trustee transfer.

You may think of life insurance in very simple terms: you buy a policy so that your loved ones will have some financial assistance when you die. So the heirs (and relatives) of that person will have higher estate taxes to pay as a result. It enables you and your family to do three things in particular. All information is believed to be from reliable sources; however, we make no representation as to its completeness or accuracy. Three, it gives you the chance to reduce your estate taxes. Also, if your estate ends up really large, the trust can buy additional life insurance to provide additional cash to pay additional estate taxes. But if you have assets of $1 million or more, you should view life insurance as a tool – kind of a Swiss army knife, in fact. What does a life insurance trust do?

The publisher is not engaged in rendering legal, accounting or other professional services. The opinions expressed are solely those of the author and may or may not be a representative opinion of The Retirement Group or John Jastremski. Sometimes these trusts establish investment policies for life insurance proceeds, and even timelines for who receives what when (families may want to delay an heir from legally receiving an inheritance until age 18 or 21, for example). This information should not be construed as investment advice. One, it provides you, your spouse and your heirs with life insurance coverage after it is implemented. We are an independent financial advisory group that specializes in transition planning and lump sum distribution. If you’d like to know more about life insurance trusts or the potentially significant changes in estate taxes over the next few years, talk to a qualified legal, financial or insurance professional today. Also, if you do this, you surrender control of your policy; the loved one you trust could end up naming another beneficiary or even cashing your policy out.

The trustee can distribute those proceeds to one or more parties as stipulated in the language of the trust. Life insurance has many potential uses in estate planning, and a life insurance trust can certainly help a family. Neither the named Representatives nor Broker/Dealer gives tax or legal advice. If other expert assistance is needed, the reader is advised to engage the services of a competent professional. A decision for life. You can make these trusts revocable, but if you do, you lose the tax benefit: the insurance proceeds will be included in your taxable estate when you die, which could increase the estate tax bill for your heirs. When you create a life insurance trust, you are creating an entity (the trust) to buy life insurance policies for you and your loved ones. We are a group of financial professionals who focus entirely on retirement planning and the design of retirement portfolios for the corporate transitioning employee.
Two, it allows a trustee to distribute death benefits from a life insurance policy as that trustee sees fit. If that person dies before you die, the cash value of the policy will be included in their taxable estate. So the insurance proceeds go into the trust when someone passes away. You don’t own the policies, the trust does. That scenario can lead to major financial and familial headaches. However, some irrevocable life insurance trusts purchase survivorship life insurance in a profit sharing plan to permit the ability to change beneficiaries.

According to the latest data from the US Department of Labour, 401(k) plan assets amounted to USD 1.6 trillion accounting for 81% of total defined contribution assets in 2002. Approximately 51% of the US workforce is integrated into one of these pension plans, although 60% has access to them. Occupational pensions are governed by The Employer Retirement Income Security Act 1974 (ERISA) which ensures minimum standards are met for all voluntary private pension plans. Taxable income from social security beneficiaries and additional income from accumulated trust funds make up the remaining 16%. Birth rates are slightly below the number needed to keep the population constant, but immigration will keep the population growing over the next decades, although at a decreasing rate. Approximately 65% of assets are allocated to employer sponsored plans with an additional 25% invested in Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs).

It is also possible to defer any payment until a certain age. Most 401(k) plans are flexible and provide retiring employees with several options for receiving plan account balances. In 2010 the United States sustains the largest pension market in the world, with assets amounting to around USD 17 trillion, the popular private pension schemes available have provided security for American citizens, dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. The vast majority are payable between 65 and 67, with some payments starting as early as 62. The United States operates a pay-as-you-go system which is financed by taxes from employers and employees, tax revenues and some interest earning funds.

A defined contribution plan is an individual account for each employee, sponsored by the employer. The extra revenue generated has accumulated in the Social Security Trust Fund and amounted to USD 2.2 trillion in 2004. There does not appear to be any appetite to change this system. Subsequently, the Pension Protection Act 2006 put measures in place from 2008, to tighten control of pension shortfall and link liability closer to the market conditions. It is important to note that the Unites States is one of the very few countries in the industrialised world not faced with a decreasing population. Together with the new incentives of automatic enrolment, the US should expect a higher proportion of private sector employees retiring with supplementary pensions.

With the baby boom of the 1980’s, social security tax was increased to relieve some of the shortfall predicted for the future. Automatic enrolment of employees into existing employer-defined contribution plans is encouraged when alternative arrangements are not in place. Employees that do not make any investment decision are subsequently enrolled onto a Qualified Default Investment Alternative (QDIA). Lump-sum payments, instalment payments for a fixed number of months and annuities are available distribution methods. The normal route to transfer UK pensions overseas is to use a jurisdiction such as Guernsey. As defined benefit plans are dependent on market performance, recent inadequate funding has resulted in a serious shortfall to the tune of USD 450 billion in 2005. Our service encompasses Pensions, investments, currency exchange and guidance on taxation in most popular ‘sunnier’ climates. This with the re-assurance and security of UK authorised and regulated advice – essential tools for your security.

Of all the defined contribution plans available the most widespread type of plan is the 401(k). New regulations on default investment options are likely to boost further growth in these funds. The age when pensions are received are variable depending on year of birth. Retirement savings have experienced steady growth especially within the IRAs and defined contribution plans. This will not keep pace with current expenditure however, and it is predicted that the fund will be exhausted by 2042. Caution though; the US does not have a double taxation agreement with Guernsey and tax implications should be completely clarified before contemplating any transfer. The state pension system in the US is not particularly generous, and most pensioners derive income from employer pensions, earnings and saved assets in addition to any social security payments.

Only 20% of the private sector contributes to a defined benefit scheme. Gerard Associates Ltd advises expats and people considering living abroad on the technical and currency options available for Pensions, QROPS, QNUPS and investments in a clear format allowing all customers to make an informed choice. These plans have seen rapid growth compared with annuities and defined benefit contracts with their share of assets for 2007 increasing to 52% overall. Fidelity get numerous enquiries about UK expats transferring their UK Pension to this scheme as I’m sure do the other USA QROPS quoted on HMRC’s website. A variety of investment and sponsored retirement plans contribute to it’s success. So for the UK expat other jurisdictions should be considered.
